Clinic for Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine and Acute Pain Services

The Department for Anaesthesiology and Surgical Intensive Care Medicine operates as a central service provider for a holistic patient’s treatment. The Department cares for about 6.000 patients a year. Nevertheless, we develop an individually formed concept of treatment for every patient, from operation till mobilisation and rehabilitation procedures. All modern anaesthetic and pain therapy methods will be used by our experienced team constituently and/or in combination. Additionally latest methods provide analgesia and high comfort, wellness and safety before and after surgical interventions.

A well-tolerated anaesthesia will be ensured by acupuncture and the use of scientifically-proofed, medicinal strategies. To be always “up to date” we cooperate with Prof. Dr. C.C. Apfel and his “Outcome Research” – workgroup of the University of California. An Acute-Pain-Service attends the patients several times a day.

It checks the analgesia and all perioperative aspects. In doing so there is a close interdisciplinary cooperation with the surgical clinics.

Nevertheless, even minor surgical interventions are often the cause of worry and anxiety for patients.

For this reason we are keen to create a suitable atmosphere in the Pre-Medication Outpatient Clinic where we are able to clarify questions about anaesthetics, intra- and post-operative monitoring and post-operative pain therapy in personal consultations. If various different anaesthesiology options are being considered, we discuss them and make decisions based primarily on the type of operation and the state of health and wishes of the patient. These could be regional or general anaesthetic and combinations of both. Traditionally we hold high competence in regional anaesthetic, thanks to this in orthopaedic surgery the proportion of partial anaesthesias is over 75 %.
